THE BARD OF LORI

  • Nevarte Gulbenkian Armenian Church Hall Iverna Gardens London, England, W8 6TP United Kingdom (map)

Last year was the 150th anniversary of the the great Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869-1923), who left an indelible impact on our literature and art. In addition to his literary heritage, his imprint and influence on Armenian social and cultural life is immense. His family home in Tiflis was one of the most important Armenian cultural hubs, a gathering place for poets, artists, musicians and other intellectuals; he was a major force in supporting the orphans after the genocide. Politically active, he had a spell in a Tsarist Russian prison.

His exquisite, elegant, often funny or philosophical works are still alive and much loved; and on his birthday, 19 February, we would like to celebrate the Amenayn Hayots Poet. Join us for an evening of poetry readings, in Armenian and English, an  illustrated talk with some rare photographs and materials, songs and even games he created to entertain his 10 children.

Admission: £5 to include a wine and refreshments reception.
